We’re beyond excited to welcome Andréa Keys Connell to Hand / Thrown! Andréa will lead a workshop focusing on handbuilding, sculpting with emotion, and underglaze application.

In this 2 day intensive workshop, we will build and underglaze fabulous, colorful heads! Andréa will demonstrate her hollow building technique that she uses to build at any scale. We will talk about facial expression, and how to tell a story through gesture and gaze. On the second day of the workshop, we will go over underglazing techniques and firing methods. Andréa will demonstrate how she develops patterns and color that work in conversation with the emotion of her pieces. Everyone will have the opportunity to underglaze their heads.

This is a weekend long intensive workshop. All wares should be taken home with you at the end of the day on Sunday, May 10th, or placed on the greenware shelf for firing, as this intensive does not allow for storage. Tools are available but it is suggested that you bring your own or purchase a kit from the studio. About the Instructor

Andréa Keys Connell is a Professor of Ceramics in the Department of Fine and Applied Art at Appalachian State University. Her work has been widely recognized, featured in national and international publications such as Colossal and The New York Times. She has exhibited internationally in galleries and museums, including the Jane Hartsook Gallery in New York City and the Gaya Culture and Art Center in Goryeong, Korea. With over 20 solo exhibitions since 2009, she has work available through Blue Spiral 1 in Asheville, NC, J Mackey Gallery in the East Hamptons, and Visions West Contemporary in Livingston, MT.

Beyond her studio practice, Andréa has extensive experience in public art commissions and collaborative projects. Her recent collaboration with Susan Alexandra in New York City was featured in Wirecutter. In addition to exhibiting her work and teaching at App State, Andréa is an accomplished educator who has led figure-sculpting workshops at renowned craft schools, including Penland, Haystack, Arrowmont, Centre d’arts Rozynski, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. She has also been invited to present as a demonstrating artist at major conferences such as NCECA, Women Working in Clay, and The Bascom’s Annual Clay Symposium.
