Support Our Mission

Clay is a beautiful thing, and we hope that everyone who wants to experience the joy of working with clay at Hand / Thrown can have the opportunity to do so. We strive to build a creative, accessible and more equitable space for everyone within our walls. Enabling artists of underrepresented communities to feel welcomed in our community is of the utmost importance to us, and you can help.

HELP SUSTAIN AND EXPAND OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMING

Scholarships help us ensure that those who want to be active in our space can be, without finances as a barrier. Too often, working with clay isn't accessible for a lot of our community members. But at Hand / Thrown, we are committed to working to close that gap. Our scholarships fund one day classes, workshops, and multi-week classes in the studio and cover the cost of tuition, firing and studio access for BIPOC, LGBTQIA, disabled, and low income students. We offer a set number of scholarships for multi-week classes and one-day workshops each session, but we want to do more--and can, with your help! All funds received towards scholarships give us the flexibility to create additional paid spots in classes across our offerings. This flexibility means not only that we can create additional opportunities for students, but also that we can give students even more choices.

Your contribution will go directly towards holding a spot in class for these students, as well as free community events for the Brookland Park neighborhood. Even a small contribution could help realize someone’s dream of working with clay for the first time, or help sustain an ongoing love of the ceramic arts. Any amount helps! By making a contribution to our scholarship programming, you’re helping us realize our dream of a truly inclusive ceramics studio space in the city of Richmond, VA.

We hope you will join us in our endeavor to continue to make this space as equitable, inclusive, and wildly creative as possible. You can specify which class you’d like to sponsor on our donation form, or sponsor a few to spread the love a little further. Your contribution makes a difference!

ONE-DAY CLASSES

From our Give it a shot! Wheel Throwing class to hand-built projects like Cozy Cottages and Altar Building, there is a one-day class for all clay enthusiasts! These classes are a great entry point for beginners who want to try their hand at clay before committing to a longer multi-week session. These one-day classes cost $50 to $65 per person.

MULTI-WEEK CLASSES

Our beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in wheel throwing, handbuilding, and slip casting range from 4-8 weeks in length. These classes are a great fit for beginners or experienced artists hoping to pick up a few new tips and tricks along the way. Most multi-week classes start at $325 (for 6 weeks) and increase to $400 (for 8 weeks), though there is some variation depending on the curriculum and techniques covered.
