Meet the Neighbors: Julio’s
This month’s Meet the Neighbors feature is a look into the life of Julio’s Bagel Shop owner, Ash Patino.
Ash and Noah opened Julio’s Bagel Shop back in April, serving up naturally leavened, boiled, and baked bagels in partnership with coffee from Recluse Roasting Project.
Stop by Julio’s on Brookland Park for incredible bagels and delicious coffee.
HAND / THROWN Tell us a little bit about you!
ASH PATINO: My name is Ash, I’m a native Virginian, a cat mom, and the youngest of three. I spent a long time in the coffee world before I switched to baking and honed most of my baking experience while living in San Francisco. Julio’s is still a small, new business of which I opened with Noah Bowman, and in partnership with Recluse Roasting. The four of us try to crank out delicious, naturally leavened bagels and carefully crafted coffee in a space that is welcoming and kind.
HT: When did you join the Hand / Thrown community?
AP: I joined it part time in 2022, I take pauses on occasion based on life and my schedule, but I keep coming back to it; with welcome and supportive arms every time.
“All anyone wants is to both provide support and feel supported, and the relationship between Hand / Thrown and Julio's is a motivating, delightful, heartwarming example of that.”
HT: Tell us about your experience at Hand / Thrown and its impact on your business.
AP: My experience at hand thrown has always been pleasant, even for a shy-guy like myself. Everyone there knows I own Julio’s which is always really cute. Some classes have made it a tradition to pop over before or during class for a snack and pick-me-up. It’s also always fun to share and show that all of our mugs in-house are made by me from over the years. I’ve been saying it for years, but i’ll say it again- all anyone wants is to both provide support and feel supported, and the relationship between Hand / Thrown and Julio's is a motivating, delightful, heartwarming example of that.
HT: What’s been your favorite class you’ve taken at Hand / Thrown?
AP: I’ve mostly only taken intermediate, but I’ve also dipped back into beginner and as well as one day class on transfers. They all have their own perks and vibes. The one day class was so much fun, it feels like being in arts and crafts at school again. Cutting, pasting, being inspired and experimenting in a low-steaks environment. Intermediate is now called Independent study, which I love because it allows for a freedom to instruct yourself, while having the safety net of a teacher around to coach you and work through current hurdles. The beginner class has the extra rigidness and structure to provide foundations, plus it is always fun and helpful to learn from different teachers.
HT: Any exciting things happening or coming up at your business?
AP: On Thursday, November 20th from 4-7pm, Recluse is hosting a Decaf Pop Up! I’m going to make some cake and cookies to pair with their coffees. It’ll be a chance to introduce some new flavors, faces, and just… hang out in the neighborhood. We are still settling into our shoes here at Julio’s and are hoping to keep playing around with our menu (cheddar bagels, whitefish salad perhaps?!) and keep gaining love and traction from the community.
