An introductory wheel throwing class for students 12-16 years of age!

A perfect beginner class for students new to throwing on the wheel or for students who’d like to continue learning. We’ll introduce techniques for throwing cylinders, cups, bowls and more, focusing on form to advance students skills and their repertoire! We'll cover wedging clay, throwing, shaping and trimming on the wheel, surface decoration and glaze application. Classes are limited to 6 participants and must be 12-16 years of age.

This is a 6 week course and each session is 2 hours long, there must be 4 students registered to confirm.

Classes are on the same day for four (6) consecutive weeks

All classes are 6 week sessions, 2.5 hours per session with materials, tools and firing included in the class fee (additional clay can be purchased if needed). Students are given a 4 shelf to store their works in progress during each session and will be notified when their wares are ready for pickup! Come explore clay with us!


Meet the Instructor

Jocelyn throws functional pottery and wood fires with a crew of potters in a large anagama south of Charlottesville. She’s been throwing on and off since childhood, with periods punctuated by working as a bench jeweler, a weaver, and an elementary art teacher. She has a double BFA from VCU in Art Education and Craft/Material Studies.
